Subject: Re: [Raghbir.Pank@brunel.ac.uk: TeX]
it was gcc 2.5.8 which produced the error that got past trip
---but only when optimized. I have definitely seen the every other
character error before. It results from a misshandling of
auto-casts from double to integer. THe hack cure is to find the
place where the cast is implied and make it explicit. The other
character
of each pair is actually there, but the huge negative x value sets it
way off in left field. Then the application of the next huge negative
corrects, then the application of the next goes out to left field,
etc.
A more recent gcc should correct the problem.

The University of Washington has ordered us to close the Northwest
Computing Support Center, and to terminate the official support
of UnixTeX. Although the termination was final as of June 14, 1994
I will continue unofficially to provide whatever services I can,
including distributions on 4mm DAT tape and 1/4 in QIC24 tape.
I cannot be near my phone on any regular schedule, but there is
an answering machine to record your messages. Please note
the changes in address and telephone number. There is no Northwest
Computing Support Center any longer.
